Each channeluses four 120W/10 A FETs, operates as a purevoltage source with an extremely low impedanceand is thus very stable. The most unique feature is that it works in fullClass-A mode up to 10 W!Thanks to the generous energy reserve of 69,600F, unlimited power is available for the largestsignal peaks. To obtain the maximum quality from this power ampit is necessary to use it with top quality audiocomponents, preferably with other Sphinxcomponents.1. UNPACKINGBefore leaving the factory every Myth 11 issubjected to stringent and extensive technical andexterior quality inspection. This ensures you will enjoy many years of highquality audio from a perfect-looking product.Attention: The power amp weighs over 10 kg!Never lift it out of the box without someonehelping you. After unpacking your Myth 11 we thereforerecommend you carefully check it for any transportdamage.Even if the component is in perfect condition youshould still keep the packing materials. If you needto transport your Myth 11 at a later time it will bebest protected by the original packing materials.2. CONTACTING THE MANUFACTURERIn case of any problem not covered in this manualor if you have other questions you may contact theSphinx International Service Department in TheNetherlands (local time: GMT +1h) during officehours at the following numbers:Phone:(+31) 35 602 0302Fax:(+31) 35 602 2806E-mail:audionleuronet.nlIt is always very helpful and efficient if you have allrelevant information about the specific product andthe problem ready. Please also refer to the User Manual of theMyth 11 for information about functions notdescribed in this manual. It is important to familiarise yourself with thespecial functions, operation and possibilitiesof the Sphinx Myth 11.SPHINX Myth 11 Service Manual 4 3. OPERATIONOnce you have finished connecting all components, you can switch on the Myth 11.Connect the mains cable to a mains outlet.Power onSwitch the Myth 11 on with the O / I switch (7) on therear panel. The STANDBY LED (3) will blink for a while afterwhich it will light red. The Myth 11 is now in stand-bymode.From now on you should switch the power amp onand off with the STANDBY button (1) on the frontpanel or the STANDBY button of another Sphinxcomponent connected to the optical CONTROL INjack. This way all circuits will remain at workingtemperature and the audio quality will be 100 %within 15 minutes after activating. Additionally itconsiderably increases the life span of thecomponent.Switch the Myth 11 on with the STANDBY button:the LED (3) will extinguish and the POWER LED (2)will light. If you activate the power amp for the first time orafter a long period of non-use with the power off,the amp will be at maximum performance after onehour. From stand-by mode it takes only around 15minutes.Power offYou switch the Myth 11 off (stand-by) with theSTANDBY button (1).N.B.: If you need to switch the system on againimmediately, you should wait for at least 60 secthough.Because switching on the amp within 30 sec willactivate the protection circuits: the red PROTECTLED (4) will blink rapidly.Only if you will not be using the amp for a longperiod (e.g. during holidays) should you switch theamp off with the O / I switch (7).In stand-by mode the Myth 11s power consumptionis still around the 70 W mark.SPHINX Myth 11 Service Manual 7 5. ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURESThe Myth 11 only has three parameters for eachchannel (so six in total) that might need adjustment:- Bias: to set the bias current and bias voltage ofthe amplifier for normal use.- Offset: to set the DC-offset voltage of theoutput. These adjustments might be necessary when theamplifier has been used for a period of time (andsettings have changed due to ageing) or when partsof the Myth 11 have been replaced.Attention:When re-adjusting any setting please ensure thatthere is no loudspeaker connected to the output!Otherwise the loudspeaker may be seriouslydamaged.Attention:The amplifier is able to generate high outputvoltages of over + or -40 V.Please be very careful during the adjustments!BiasWith this procedure you set the proper bias level forthe power FETs. This ensures their Class Aoperation at low power levels.Connect the amplifier according to the drawing“Measurement Set-up” (page 11).The input of the amplifier must be shorted (by wayof the MUTE function of the oscillator). Switch the amplifier ON and wait until it hasreached the proper working temperature Set the millivolt-meter to the DC-range. Place the two measuring clips of the meteracross one of the source resistorsLeft: R30L, R31L, R39L, R40LRight:R30R, R31R, R39R, R40R The level for each should be 8 mV DC (2 mV).If not: adjust potmeter P2L (Left) or potmeterP2R (Right) until the level is 8 mV. Repeat this procedure after 20 minutes tofinalise the adjustment. Switch the oscillator on and set it to 1 kHz and alevel of 0 dBV (1 V). Check the distortion with a THD analyser: itshould be conform to the specified value(0.006% IHF-A 1 20 kHz 50 W into 8ohm).If this is correct the procedure is finished. You may now switch off the amplifier or continuewith another adjustment procedure.OffsetThe Offset adjustment procedure minimises the DCoffset value of the amplifier output. This DC offset isimportant when capacitive loads are used, such aselectrostatic loudspeakers. These loudspeakersoften use a very low-impedance step-uptransformer. The amplifier sees this load as ashort for the DC voltage.Connect the amplifier according to the drawing“Measurement Set-up” (page 11).The input of the amplifier must be shorted (by wayof the MUTE function of the oscillator). Switch the amplifier ON and wait until it hasreached the proper working temperature. Set the millivolt-meter to the DC-range. Place the measurement clips of the meter overthe output terminal. The level should not exceed +1 or -1 mV DC.If it does: adjust potmeter P1L (Left) or P1R(Right) until the level is within this range. You may now switch off the amplifier or continuewith another adjustment procedure.SPHINX Myth 11 Service Manual9 7.
