Warning: Laser Radiation RadioFans.CN 收音机爱 好者资料库 SAFETY WARNINGS This instrument is designed for testing fi bre optic installations and so meets the safety requirements of IEC 60825-1: 1994 (including amendment A11: 1996) and IEC 60825-2: 1995 (including amendment A1: 1998). This products output levels are within the Accessible Emission Limits (AEL) for a Class 1 Laser Product and so does not generate any optical hazards internally. However it can be used to test optical fi bres in environments where light sources that would cause an optical hazard could be present. This corresponds to working within the AEL for Class 1, Class 2, Class 3A and Class 3B lasers, therefore, please take note of the following safety warnings: Under no circumstances should a connector end-face, prepared optical fi bre or fractured optical fi bre be viewed directly unless the power received from the fi bre is known to be safe (as defi ned by IEC 60825) and under local control. AVOID EXPOSURE TO BEAM if the accessible radiation is within the AEL for Class 3B lasers. DO NOT STARE INTO BEAM OR VIEW DIRECTLY WITH OPTICAL INSTRUMENTS if the accessible radiation is within the AEL for Class 3A lasers. DO NOT STARE INTO BEAM if the accessible radiation is within the AEL for Class 2 lasers. The instrument should not be used if any part of it is damaged. Refer to operating instructions for further explanation and precautions. Safety Warnings and Precautions must be read and understood before the instrument is used. They must be observed during use. NOTE: THE INSTRUMENT MUST ONLY BE USED BY SUITABLY TRAINED AND COMPETENT PERSONS. RadioFans.CN 收音机爱 好者资料库 4 Introduction Thank you for purchasing this quality AVO product. Before attempting use of your new instrument please take the time to read this user guide, ultimately this will save you time, advise you of any precautions you need to take and could prevent damage to yourself and the instrument. The MLS2000 is a stable optical dual Laser source that can be used in conjunction with an optical power meter for optical loss testing of fi bre optic cables. It has been pre-calibrated to output 1310 nm or 1550 nm respectively for an output level of 6 dBm into a 9/125 single-mode fi bre. 5 1.0 User Controls and Display 1.1 On /Off Switch To turn the unit on, depress the ON/OFF switch. The unit defaults to CW (Continuous Wave) and 1310 nm output on power up, this is indicated by the CW and the 1310 nm LED illuminating. To turn the unit off, depress the ON/OFF switch again. 1.2 CW / MOD Switch Used to select the Laser output to either CW or 1 kHz modulation. Selection is indicated by the illumination of the appropriate LED. To change back to previous mode, depress the CW/MOD switch again. 1.3 Wavelength () Switch To select the 1550 nm laser, depress the lambda switch. Selection is indicated by the illumination of the 1550 nm LED. To change back to the 1310 nm laser output, depress the switch again. Selection is indicated by the illumination of the 1310 nm LED 1.4 LO BATT LED This LED illuminates when the internal alkaline batteries require replacement or NiCd/NiMH batteries require recharging. 1.5 CHARGE LED This LED illuminates when the external Mains adapter is connected to the source indicating that the rechargeable batteries are on charge. See section 3.0 for details. 6 2.0 Operation This instrument can be used in conjunction with an optical power meter for multiple applications including Optical Loss Testing, Optical Continuity Testing, Acceptance Testing of Fibre Transmitters and Received Power Testing of optical receivers. There are multiple techniques to achieve these types of tests, but a typical procedure is detailed below: 2.1 Optical Loss Testing Take an optical light source and power meter with appropriate patch cords and mating adapter (uniter) to match the optical fi bre under test. Clean all the connectors and connect the light source via the fi rst patch cord, the uniter and the second patch cord to the power meter so the attenuation of both cords can be eliminated. The link to be tested is then inserted between them so the optical loss associated only with this link can be found. This test is normally repeated multiple times with the interconnections between the patch cord and the fi bre under test disconnected and reconnected before each time and an average result taken to ensure repeatability and stability. 2.2 Optical Continuity Testing Use an optical light source (of a known output power) and power meter with patch leads of a known optical loss and a uniter matched to the optical fi bre under test. Clean all the connections and insert the link to be tested between the light source and the power meter. Measure the output of the light source through the fi bre under test and check that it is above a pre- determined power level. This is a more simple go, no go test. 2.3 Acceptance Testing of Fibre Transmitters Use a power meter with a suitable dynamic range for the transmitter under test and patch leads of a known optical loss. Clean all the connections and connect the power meter to the transmitter via the patch cord. Turn on the transmitter and allow the output to stabilise before measuring the output and comparing the result to an acceptance standard or versus historical data. This test is normally repeated multiple times with the interconnections disconnected and reconnected before each time and an average result taken to ensure repeatability and stability. 2.4 Received Power Testing Use a power meter with a suitable dynamic range for the receiver under test and an adapter to match the connections on the receiver. Clean all the connections and connect the power meter to the fi bre supplying the receiver under test so that the power meter is now where the receiver would normally go. Turn on the optical transmitter of the fi bre system and allow the output to stabilise before measuring the output at the receiver and comparing the result to the input specifi cations of the receiver. This test is 7 normally repeated multiple times with the interconnections disconnected and reconnected before each time and an average result taken to ensure repeatability and stability. The MLS2000 is supplied and confi gured for use with a 2 LR6 (AA) dry cells. A 12V DC charger (See Optional Accessories) can be used as a dual power source; this will not apply a charge to the dry cells while fitted. Alternatively, within the battery compartment there is a switch to change the battery type from alkaline to NiCd/NiMh. If the DC charger is now connected to the instrument with rechargeable batteries in it (the switch is set to NiCd/NiMh) then the batteries will start to recharge. Allow 14 16 hours to fully charge a rechargeable battery. Do NOT attempt to recharge alkaline cells, over heating would occur and the instrument may be damaged. When the switch is set to NiCd/NiMh, only fi t rechargeable cells. 3.0 Batteries 8 4.0 Specifi cation 4.1 Optical Specifi cation Source Type:Dual Laser Wavelength:1310 nm and 1550 nm Wavelength Accuracy: 30 nm Output Waveform:CW or internally chopped 1k Hz Spectral FWHM:3 nm typically.
