FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION The Sanborn Carrier Preamplifier Model 150-1100 is a plug-in preamplifier used with the 150 series of Sanborn systems to measure such variables as strain, pressure, force, displacement, flow, temperature, etc., with an external transducer applied to the point of measurement. Operation is shown in the block diagram. LOAD -r SIGNAL CARRIER TRANSDUCER PREAMPLIFIER SIGNAL DRIVER TO EXCITATION . AMPLIFIER . 150-1100 GALVANOMETE R Figure 2. Operation ol Sanborn Carrier Preamplifier Moc/el 150-1100. The Carrier Preamplifier supplies an excitation voltage to the transducer. The transducer returns a signal voltage to the Carrier Preamplifier. The standard excitation frequency is 2400 cycles, with 600 cycles and 1200 cycles available by a selection of plug-in comPooents. When the physical variable applied to the transducer is zero, the signal voltage returned to the Carrier Preamplifier is zero. When a physical load is present on the transducer ,the signal voltage has a magnitude and phasing which represents the magnitude and direction of the physical load. The Carrier Preamplifier interprets this signal voltage in terms of the physical load, and moves the galvanometer stylus across the recording paper to show the magnitude and direction of the load on the transducer. The Carrier Preamplifier includes a ZERO SUPPRESSION control which can suppress the indication of a static load, up to the transducer full load rating. This allows recording small changes in load v.hich might otherwise be obscured by a larger load. The transducer is not supplied with the Carrier Preamplifier. The transducer may be a half-bridge or full- bridge made with strain gage elements, a commercially assembled resistance or reactance bridge, a dif- fcrencial transformer, or a resistanc:c thermometer bridge circuit. 2. TABULATION OF CHARACTERISTICS (Including the Driver Amplifier and Recorder SENSITIVITY Depends on the external sensing element used (strain gage, transducer, differen- tial transformer, resistance thermometer, etc.). Expressed as the number of load units (amount of strain, degrees of temperature change, grams of force, etc.), which gives one centimeter of stylus deflection. 1 SANBORN CARRIER PREAMPLIFIER MODEL 150-1100 2. TAB ULA TION OF CHARACTERISTICS Including the Driver Amplifier and Recorder) Cant.) EXCITATION IMPEDANCE Supplied by the Carrier Preamplifier from its internal oscillator. Approximately 4.5 volts, 2400 cycle standard excitation frequency, 600 cycles or 1200 cycles arc optional. Input impedance of the Carrier Preamplifier is 2500 ohms resistive. Transducer impedance at.its excitation voltage terminals should be aboe 100 ohms; lower values load the oscillator excessively and reduce the sensitivity. Transduc.:r impcd.lllcc at its sisnal terminals should be below 1,000 ohms. Higher values reduce the sensitivicy by introducing too much impedance in the Preamplifier input circuit. 100 to 300 ohms is the design center range. FREQUENCY RESPONSE Load components from zero to 100 cycles. Sec figure 1. RISE TIME CALIDRA TION DRIFT ZERO SUPPRESSION 3. FRONT PANEL DATA GAGE FACTOR ZERO SUPPRESSION 2 Five milliseconds (approx.). Sec figure 1. Rise time is measured on the record- ing by the best suaight line approximation to the rise of a square wave input signal. Internal or external. With internal calibration, pressing the CAL button inserts a calibration voltage equal to the signal from the transducer at two percent of its rated load. This docs not unbalance the bridge circuit but inserts an accurately calibrated signal into the input circuit. With external calibration, a known static load is applied co die transducer. Less than 0.1 millimeter of baseline dtift per hour, after the specified warmup period. Up to 1003 of the transducer full load eating. A ten-turn 1,000 division Hclipot with Ioele, set co the sensitivity of the entire transducer circuit, rather than the sensitivity of an individual clement. Setting is in millivolts of open-circuit transducer signal, per vole of excitation, at full rated load on the transducer. Each number on the outer dial represcncs one milli- volt per volt, and each number on the inner dial represents hundredths of one millivolt per volt. For example, if the outer dial reads 2, and the inner dial reads 83, this is a GAGE FACTOR dial setting of 2. 83. The dial setting determines (1) the maximum amount of load which chc ZERO SUPPRESSION dial will suppress (normally 1003 of raced load), (2) the- magnitude of the calibration signal from the CAL button and (3) the size of the balancing voltages. This dial is set by a formula or by a static load procedure. A ten-cum 1,000 division Hclipot with lock, set to the percent of full rated load to be suppressed. Each ten divisions normally represent one percent of full rated load on the transducer. For example, if the outer dial reads 6, and the inner dial reads 52, chis reading of 652 means that 65.23 of the full rated load is suppressed on the recording. With a 500 pound transducer, this means that 326 pounds is suppressed on the recording. a J 3. FROHT PA.MEL DATA (Cont.) INSTRUCTION MAtWAL The maximum amount of load which the ZERO SUPPRESSION dial will suppress (normally 1003 of rated load) is determined by the GAGE FACTOR dial setting. Inserts a signal into the Preamplifier equal to two percent of tlie full.load signal from the transducer. This docs not unbalance the transducer bridge circuit, but instead inserts an accurately calibrated signal into the transducer circuit. The amplitude of this calibration signal is determined by the GAGE FACTOR dial setting. Socket for connecting a full-bridge circuit, a transducer, or a differential trans former. The mating connecror is supplied with the instrument. Terminal 13 and D supply the bridge excitation voltage, terminal E is the shield ground terminal, and terminal A and C are the signal terminals, with terminal C the signal ground. Two pairs of terminals for connecting the two clements of a resistance half- bridge circuit. The ground terminals are black. Leave the terminals free when using the FlJLL 13RIDGE socket. The settiniz refers co the sensitivity of the entire external circuit, rather than to the sensitivity of an indiiJual element. C. COHHECTIHG THE BRIDGE Apply power, and warm up the Carrier Preamplifier for 30 minutes. With a half-bridge, connect to the panel terminals as shown in figure 3, where the dotted lines show the behind-panel components which complete the bridge circuit. Connect one element to the red and black ter- minals marked Rl and connect the ocher element co the red and black terminals marked R2. To reverse che direction of stylus deflection, reverse the connections to the red terminals and rebalance. When using a high-resistance half-bridge, or a half-bridge reactance element, complete the bridge externally with a pair of matched 100-ohm resiscors having low temperature coefficient, with their junction grounded. 5 SANBORN CARRIER PREAMPLIFIER MODEL 150-100 6 2. With either circuit, all connections must be made firmly; a loose connection may give spurious signals on the recording. The resistance of each external clement mut be between 100 and 1,000 ohms, to maincain rated sensitivity. The ground connections must be as shown in the figure; other connections can form ground loops -and pick up unwanted signals from nearby circuits. 3. SETTING THE GAGE FACTOR DIAL The GAGE FACTOR dial setting controls the calibration, zero suppression, and balancing voltages. Two ways of finding the required GAGE FACTOR dial setting are 1-!iven in this paragraph. The basic sensitivicy is the strain, in microinchcs per inch, per centimeter of stylus deflection, when the ATTENUATOR is at Xl. A. First method. Set the GAGE FACTOR dial by the table, where the term gage factor refers to the individual strain gage elements. Number of active arms 1 2 4 GAGE FACTOR dial setting (1.25) (gage factor) gage factor gage factor basic sensitivity 50 microinch I inch / cm. 20 microinch / inch / cm. 10 microinch / inch / cm. B. Lock d1e GAGE FACTOR dial. The dial is now set, and the bridge is ready for balancing, when the 30-minute warmup is complete. -,.- INSTRUCTION MANUAL 3. SETTING THE GAGE FACTOR DIAL (Cont.) C. Alternate method. Select a basic sensitivity f:om the table below. A decimal multiple of 1, 2, or 5 i:. recommended. NUMBER OF ACTIVE ARMS 1 2 4 BASIC SENSITIVITY LIMITS 40 10 100 microinch/inch/ cm. 20 to 50 microinch/inch/ cm. 10 to 25 microinch/inch/ cm. D. Now set the GAGE FACTOR dial by the formula, ;here the term gage factor refers to the individual strain gage elements: Setting (.025) x (gage factor) x (number of active arms) x (basic sensitivity) E. Lock the GAGE FACTOR dial. The dial is now set, and the bridge is ready for balancing, when the 30-minute warmup is complete. 4. BALANCING Balancing compensates for the resistance and capacitance unbalance of the bridge circuit. A. After connecting the bridge, and 30-minutes warmup, and setting the GAGE FACTOR dial, set the panel controls for balancing. ATTENUATOR . OFF SENSITIVITY . . . . . . fully clockwise ZERO SUPPRESSION OUT / IN . . OUT HALF BRIDGE/ FULL BRIDGE . llALF BRIDGE or FULL BRIDGE, depending on 1he circui1. B. Set the OPERATE BALANCE switch to OPERATE. Center the styh:s with the POSITION control. Then set the OPERATE-BALANCE s9.itch to BALANCE. C. See that there is no strain on the bridge. Advance the ATTENUATOR one step ac a time, meanwhile keeping the stylus at its null position (as far down on the chart as possibie) with the RES BAL and CAP BAL controls. Continue to ATTENUATOR Xl. D. Set the OPERATE-BALANCE switch to OPERATE. Make a final fine adjustment of the RES BAL control so the stylus does not move when turning the ATTENUATOR between Xl and OFF. Then re- turn the ATTENUATOR to OFF. E. Leick the CAP BAL and RES BAL controls. The bridge is now balanced and the system is ready for calibration. 5. CALIBRATION Calibration adjusts the system to its basic sensitivity. The basic sensitivicy is the strain in microinches per inch per centimeter of stylus deflection, when the ATTENUATOR is at Xl. The basic sensitivity was selected in paragraph 3, SETTLlG THE GAGE FACTOR DL.L. A. After connecting, setting the GAGE FACTOR dial, 30-minutes wa:mup, and balancing, check that the bridge is not loaded, and then set the ATTENUATOR to Xl. B. Press the CAL button intermittently, and adjust the SENSITIVITY control for a stylus deflection of exactly two centimeters. Then return che A fTENUA TOR to OFF. C. Write the basic sensitivity, from paragraph 3, directly on the recording Permapaper. This is the number of microinches per inch of strain represented by one centimeter of stylus defle,-tion when the ATTENU- ATOR is at Xl. D. Lock the SENSITIVITY control. The system is now calibrated, and is ready for operation. 7 ., SANBORN CARRIER PREAMPLIFIER MODL:L 150-llOO 6. OPERATION WITHOUT ZERO SUPPRESSION A. Check that the steps of connecting, setting the GAGE FACTOR dial, 30 minutes warmup, balancing, and calibra
