ThisOption,availableforboththe5485Aandthe5487A InputPlug-Ins,enablesuseof the5480A VARIANCE OUTPUTsignaltocheckvalidityoftheaveragedsignal.The Optionmaybeorderedinstalledandtestedatthefactory,oritmaybeinstalledin thefield.FieldinstallationconsistsofreplacingtheSwitchingLogicBAssembly (05485-60010) with SwitchingLogicBAssembly(05485-60020); nowiringchanges arerequired. Astheinputwaveformisprocessed,itsaveragepatternisstoredinthe SignalAnalyzers memory.TheVarianceOptioncomparestheinputsignalagainstthispattern,andits tracerepresentsdifferencesbetweenthetwo.Thevariancetracecanbeusedtoidentify pointsintheaveragedwaveformwherethereisadditionalactivityotherthanthatadded simplybyrandomnoise.Ifthevariancetraceisastraightline,thentheaveraged waveformistheresultof asinglerepetitiveinputwhichwastime-lockedtothesync- .hronizingpulse(exceptforthespecialcasewheretheabsolutedeviationofthespurious inputfromtheaverageisthesameatallpointsonthewaveform). Iftheleadingortrailingedgeof apulseorsquarewaveisjittering(orappearstobe jitteringduetoajitteringtriggersignal),thevariancetracewillnotbeastraightline (thusindicatingthattherewassomethinginthesignalbesidesnoiseanddata).Ifthe inputsignalwaveformchanges,thevariancewillnotbeastraightline,butwillhavea shapeofitsown,reflectingthesignalchange.Thevariancetraceisalsousefulfor detectingwhenasignalisnotpresentduringtheentireanalysisinterval,.by showing thedifferencebetweenthestoredaveragedsignalandthemissinginputsignal.Allthat wouldhappentotheaveragedsignaltraceisthatitsamplitudewouldshrinkslightly (depending onnumberofsweepsthathadbeenaveraged). 2-2.OPERATION. Tooperatethevarianceoption,connect5480Arear-panelVARIANCEOUTPUTconnector througha BNC-to-BNCcabletothe5485Aor5487Afront-panelconnectorforanyunused channel;usethischanneltodisplaythevarianceoutput;setDISPLAYforthischannel toDATA;setMEMORYSELECTORto anyunusedQUARTERorHALF.Eachpointin thevarianceoutputcorrespondstothepointimmediatelyprecedingitintheaveraged signalwaveform. OPERATION Thepurposeofthismodificationistopermittheanalyzerto reducenoisethatissynchronouswiththetriggersignal.After summingfor2Nsweeps(asdeterminedbySWEEPNUMBER (2N) switch)thesignalmaybecutoff - leaVingtheinputlead attached.Inputpolarityisthenreversed(byswitchingatadded BNC)andSTARTbuttonisdepressed,initiatingsummation .oeranadditional2Nsweeps.Becauseofreversedinput polarity,noisesynchronouswiththetriggersignalwillbe subtractedfromthestoreddata.
