These pre- amplifiers providethenecessaryequalizationfor theRIAArecording characteristic.Additionalplug- inpreamplifierboardshavebeendesignedfor directmoving coilmicrophoneinputorfordirect inputfromlow-level,highimpedancesources. Addingthisfeaturewillrequirethattheuserbuild thepreamplifierboards, installandwireprinted circuitconnectorsinthedeck, drillfrontorrear panel holes as required, andmodifyselectorswitch wiring. Humanddistortionareinaudible. As a resultofcarefulattentiontofilteringandtolead routingonprintedcircuitboards, theresidual humis wellbelowthermalnoise (which itself has beenminimizedbyoptimuminputstage design). Theoutputstagesoftheamplifiers areoperated class-Btoreducestandbypowerdrainandare biasedandlocallydegeneratedtoreducecrossover distortion.A largeamountofoverall negative feed- back, rangingfromover100dBloopgainatdcand lowfrequenciestoover50dBatthetopofthe audiorangefurtherreducesanyremaining har- monicandinter-modulationdistortion.Sincethe /-l-circuits aredirectcoupled, overload produces nolongtimeconstanttransients;thepeaks are simply clippedandtheoriginal waveform resumes atitspropervalue immediately afterward.Be- causeofthelargeamountoffeedback, signals onlyafractionofa dB belowactualoverload typicallyshowatotaldistortionover75dB below thefundamental. Bridged-teenetworksinthe8-circuitsofthe amplifiers, andactive filters inthemixing and controlboard,enablethelow-end responsetobe maintaineddownto20Hzandtofalloffvery rapidlybelowtheaudible range. This preventsthe amplifierandloudspeakersfrombeing driven beyondtheirlinear excursionsbylowfrequency transientsarisingfromsuchsourcesaswarped recordsorbreathblastsintomicrophones.Thehigh endresponse isreducedat18dBperoctave above 20kcbyanotherpairofactive filterstoprotect theamplifiers against overloadby, orrectification of,strongr-f signals. Thepoweramplifiers areprotectedagainst damage from accidental short-circuitsattheirout- puts.Momentaryshortswill havenoeffect, But sustainedshortsmayblowoneormoreofthepro- tective fuses.Inaddition, allpowersupplyoutputs areeithercurrentlimitedorfused sothatshorts fromtestprobeswill in general causenodamage. Finally, considerableeffortwasdevotedto reducing switching transients. A balanced build-up anddecayofpowersupplyvoltagesandcareful balancingoffunctiondropsminimizestheturn-on transients intheamplifiers.
