Be sure to make the correct connections, paying at- tention to the L (left channel), R (right channel),(+) and - J marks. Plug in the cables and connect the lead wires securely. Loose connections will result in unsatisfactory sound reproduction or cause noise pro- blems. Refer to Fig. 1. on Page 5. Refer to INSTALLATION OF FM ANTENNA for pro- per antenna installation. 1. ANTENNA TERMINALS Connecting an FM Antenna Choose an appropriate FM Antenna, taking into consideration the strength of signals to be received and the prevailing conditions for FM reception. 0 ipole Antenna Connect the Dipole Antenna supplied with the SYSTEM to the ANTENNA terminals marked FM 30011 (Fig. 2). Fig. 2 Connect suitable FM outdoor or indoor dipole antenna to the FM antenna input terminals. Position dipole antenna for best reception. For outdoor antenna system using coDxial cable, refer to the drawing below. NOTE: In weak-signal areas, the use of an outdoor FM antenna is necessary for good FM reception. Contact your dealer for advice. d 20 mm 25/32) LJ 10 mm (3/8) Be sure the shield braid contacts the clamp 2. AM INDOOR LOOP ANTENNA . This tuner is equipped with an AM loop indoor an tenna to receive local AM broadcast stations. Snap the loop antenna into the plastic clip provided on the right side of the tuner and con,ect the wires from the loop antenna to thC terminals marked AM and GNO (See Fig. 3). If the reception is weak on some stations. adjust the position of the Loop antenna. If the reception cannot be improved, the installation of an AM external antenna is recommended. NOTE: When recording an AM broadcast or listening to it while dubbing, beat noise may occur. If it does. place the AM loop indoor antenna as far away from a cas sette deck as possible. 6 Antenna Holder = Loop Antenna Fig. 3 ,.-When attaching the antenna to the unit-. This type of installation may cause impaired recep- tion or result in signal noise. If possible, attach the antenna to a rack, a wall, or a column. Move the antenna toward the right or left to find the point of best reception. Outdoor single-wire antenna for AM reception. For the reception of faint AM signals in a remote area, or inside a ferro concrete building, the installation of a single wire outdoor antenna is recommended. Spread an insulated wire about 30 feet in length. An antenna of this kind will pick up radio waves too weak for the loop antenna to receive. A single-wire antenna stretched along the house will also produce good results. The indoor end of the antenna should be connected to the ANTENNA terminal marked AM. GNO (Ground I connection 7 When installing an outdoor AM antenna, connect a ground wire to the ANTENNA terminal marked GND. Note to CA TV system installer: This reminder is provided to call the CATV system in sta liers attention to Article 820-22 of the NEC that pro- vides guidelines for proper grounding and, in particular, specifies that the cable ground shall be connected to t_he grounding system of the building as close to the point of cable entry as practical. FM ANTENNA INSTALLATION For the best FM sound quality, it is necessary to install an appropriate type of antenna. Consideration should be given to the signal strength of broadcast stations and the surrounding conditions. SELECTION OF A FM ANTENNA With nearby FM stations: Use the dipole antenna supplied with the RS30 for the reception of local stations. (See Fig. 21 NOTE: Every antenna has a directional characteristic (its ability to pick up signals varies according to its Orienta tionl. Spread the T-section of the dipole antenna. Rotate it in order to determine the best signal-receiving position and then install it In that position. In areas relatively near FM stations: In case the supplied dipole antenna fails to eliminate noise interference, or if you want to pick up signals from distant stations, install a multi-element outdoor antenna. NOTE: Generally, the sensitivity of an outdoor FM antenna corresponds to the number of its elements. This sho uld be the criterion for the selection of a FM antenna. Directional characteristic of an outdoor FM antenna: An increase in the number of elements not only im proves the sensitivity of the antenna but also enhances its directional characteristics. This means that such an antenna has to be positioned accurately for the best reception of FM radio waves. MULTI-PATH DISTORTION A nearby mountain or a high-rise building reflects FM radio waves, which interferes with the incoming signals. This noise and sound distortion is known as multi-path distortion. Multi-path distortion can be considerably reduced by tak ing advantage of the directional characteristics of a multi- element FM antenna and by using an antenna rotor. GENERAL GUIDELINES ON FM ANTENNAS FOR OUTDOOR INSTALLATION Keep the foll owing in mind when installing a outdoor FM antenna: Install the antenna away from road traffic and place the antenna as high above the ground as possible. Determine the best antenna position in relation to nearby buildings and trees. Keep the antenna away from high-voltage power lines. JACKS AND TERMINALS ON RECEIVER PHONO INPUT JACKS Connect the output cables from a turntable to the jacks marked PHONO on the receiver. The upper jack is for the L (left) channel and the I ewer one for the R (rightl channel. Ge sure to make the correct connections. CD/DAT INPUT JACKS To connect the audio output jacks from a compact disc CD) or a OAT. SWITCHED AND UNSWITCHED AC OUTLETS To connect an external audio or video player on the rear AC outlets. Be sure the AC wattage rating of the external unit does-not exceed the wattage rating printed on each outlet, The unit connected to the switched outlet is con- trolled on the receiver power switch. TAPE IN/OUT JACKS Make the connections from the TAPE REC (LINE IN) on the rear of a cassette deck, to the REC (OUT) jacks on the rear of the receiver. Make the connections from the TAPE PLAY (LINE OUT) on the rear of a cassette deck to the PLAY IN) jacks on the receiver. SPEAKER TERMINALS (Connecting the speakers) Four terminals arc provided to connect one pair of speakers. Place one speaker on the left side of the receiver and connect it to the terminal marked L (leftl. Place the other speaker on the right side of the receiver and connect It to the terminal marked R right). Be careful to observe the correct polariw of the speaker connections. The (+) plus and (-) minus terminals on the speakers, must be connected to the ( +) red and (- ) black on the terminals on the rear of the receiver. (If you need to replace the speaker wires for longer ones, be sure t.o use two color speaker wires for easy identification). If the polarity is not indicated on the speakers, just con- nect them. If the sound does not come from a point between the two speakers and the bass response appears Insufficient. the speaker connections are out of phase. Reverse the (+) and - ) connections on either one of the speakers. CAUTION: Be sure the lead of the speaker wires do not touch each other this can cause a short circuit on the speaker terminals. 1 press the rminal, , 1 insert the stropped _ !mi- wire and release the terminal. 2 Pull lightly on the connection to make sure it is secure. IMPORTANT: Before connecting the speaker cords to the speaker ter- minals, strip about 3/8 inch of insulation from the end of each conductor. Twist the exposed strands of wire tightly, so that the wire ends become easy to handle and good contact can be maintained. Push down on the terminal lever with your finger. Insert the speaker wire into the hole and release the lever. 8 FRONT PANEL CONTROLS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS D 19 l SCCYTT , . . ,.1 ,r,ntf I tw I JTIEI kkJ . 1 I I. ,1, - lt111p-.,_.,!I 18 17 1) POWER SWITCH Press the power switch to turn the unit on. tThe receier will be ready for operation in 2 to 3 seconds.
