、 instrument. The MLS1000 is a stable optical dual LED source that can be used in conjunction with an optical power meter for optical loss testing of fi bre optic cables. It has been pre-calibrated to output 850nm or 1300nm respectively for an output level of 20 dBm into a 62.5/125 multi-mode fi bre.
、 5 1.0 User Controls and Display 1.1 On /Off Switch To turn the unit on, depress the ON/OFF switch. The unit defaults to CW (Continuous Wave) and 1310 nm output on power up, this is indicated by the CW and the 1310 nm LED illuminating. To turn the unit off, depress the ON/OFF switch again. 1.2Wavele
、ngth () Switch To select the 1300nm output, depress the lambda switch. Selection is indicated by the illumination of the 1300nm LED. To change back to the 850nm output, depress the switch again. Selection is indicated by the illumination of the 850nm LED. 1.3 CW / MOD Switch Used to select the LED o

To change back to the previous mode, depress the CW/MOD switch again. 1.4 LO BATT LED This LED illuminates when the internal alkaline batteries require replacement or NiCd/NiM
、H batteries require recharging. 1.5 CHARGE LED This LED illuminates when the external Mains adapter is connected to the source indicating that the rechargeable batteries are on charge. See section 3.0 for details. 6 2.0 Operation This instrument can be used in conjunction with an optical power meter
、 for multiple applications including Optical Loss Testing, Optical Continuity Testing, Acceptance Testing of Fibre Transmitters and Received Power Testing of optical receivers. There are multiple techniques to achieve these types of tests, but a typical procedure is detailed below: 2.1 Optical Loss
、Testing Take an optical light source and power meter with appropriate patch cords and mating adapter (uniter) to match the optical fi bre under test. Clean all the connectors and connect the light source via the fi rst patch cord, the uniter and the second patch cord to the power meter so the attenu
、ation of both cords can be eliminated. The link to be tested is then inserted between them so the optical loss associated only with this link can be found. This test is normally repeated multiple times with the interconnections between the patch cord and the fi bre under test disconnected and reconn
、ected before each time and an average result taken to ensure repeatability and stability. 2.2 Optical Continuity Testing Use an optical light source (of a known output power) and power meter with patch leads of a known optical loss and a uniter matched to the optical fi bre under test. Clean all the
、 connections and insert the link to be tested between the light source and the power meter. Measure the output of the light source through the fi bre under test and check that it is above a pre- determined power level. This is a more simple go, no go test. 2.3 Acceptance Testing of Fibre Transmitter
、s Use a power meter with a suitable dynamic range for the transmitter under test and patch leads of a known optical loss. Clean all the connections and connect the power meter to the transmitter via the patch cord. Turn on the transmitter and allow the output to stabilise before measuring the output
、 and comparing the result to an acceptance standard or versus historical data. This test is normally repeated multiple times with the interconnections disconnected and reconnected before each time and an average result taken to ensure repeatability and stability. 7 2.4 Received Power Testing Use a p
、ower meter with a suitable dynamic range for the receiver under test and an adapter to match the connections on the receiver. Clean all the connections and connect the power meter to the fi bre supplying the receiver under test so that the power meter is now where the receiver would normally go. Tur
、n on the optical transmitter of the fi bre system and allow the output to stabilise before measuring the output at the receiver and comparing the result to the input specifi cations of the receiver. This test is normally repeated multiple times with the interconnections disconnected and reconnected
、before each time and an average result taken to ensure repeatability and stability. The MLS1000 is supplied and confi gured for use with a 2 LR6 (AA) dry cells. A 12V DC charger (See Optional Accessories) can be used as a dual power source; this will not apply a charge to the dry cells while fitted.
、 Alternatively, within the battery compartment there is a switch to change the battery type from alkaline to NiCd/NiMh. If the DC charger is now connected to the instrument with rechargeable batteries in it (the switch is set to NiCd/NiMh) then the batteries will start to recharge. Allow 14 16 hours
